King Ur-Nammu raised its great ziggurat around the 21st century BC; it is among the best preserved anywhere.
Excavations in the 1920s uncovered the Royal Cemetery and its treasures, including the Standard of Ur and a lyre crowned with a golden bull’s head. Tradition links the city to the Prophet Abraham.
