Ancient Wasit

مدينة واسط الأثرية

Across the agesWasit

Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf founded it around 702 AD midway between Kufa and Basra, hence its name, “the middle”.

It was abandoned when the Tigris changed course; its best-known survivor is an ornate gateway flanked by two minarets.
